## How "European" is Defined
For both the directory and the research output, European means legal headquarters in the European Union (27 member states), European Economic Area (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein), the United Kingdom, or Switzerland. Founder nationality is not used. Subsidiaries of US public companies (e.g., Google DeepMind, AMD-Silo) and Delaware-incorporated companies operating in Europe (e.g., Hugging Face, Lovable, Black Forest Labs) are excluded from the "European" classification.
