European product - Your data is protected under GDPR and stays in the EU
by Tresorit AG · Founded 2011
Tresorit is a Swiss-Hungarian end-to-end encrypted cloud storage and collaboration platform founded in 2011 by Istvan Lam, Szilveszter Szebeni, and Gyorgy Szilagyi. Headquartered in Zurich and acquired by Swiss Post in 2021 (while remaining independently operated), Tresorit uses zero-knowledge RSA-4096 encryption — meaning even Tresorit staff cannot access your files. The platform serves businesses that handle sensitive data: legal firms, healthcare, finance, and government. Beyond basic cloud storage, Tresorit offers secure data rooms (Tresorit Engage), electronic signatures (eSign), and email encryption.

Tresorit occupies a specific niche: it is the strongest option for teams that need encrypted cloud storage with compliance certifications and cannot compromise on security. The zero-knowledge architecture is genuinely zero-knowledge — Tresorit cannot decrypt your files even if compelled by a court order, because they do not hold the keys. The Swiss Post acquisition in 2021 raised eyebrows, but the company continues to operate independently from Zurich, and Swiss jurisdiction remains among the strongest for data protection. The main trade-off versus Google Drive or Dropbox is collaboration. Real-time co-editing of documents inside Tresorit does not exist the way Google Docs works — you download, edit locally, and re-upload. For teams that live in collaborative docs all day, this is a real limitation. Storage is also less generous: the free Basic plan is minimal, and business plans start at 3 users minimum. But for use cases where security is non-negotiable — legal document exchange, healthcare records, financial data, M&A data rooms — Tresorit is the EU-jurisdiction answer to Dropbox and Box, with encryption that actually means something.
