How the map is made

What is counted

Every active software listing on BuiltInEu from a company based in Europe: the EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Physical products (food, personal care, electronics) are left out. Each product is one dot, counted once.

Where a dot goes

In the country recorded as the company’s base. Dots gather around a point inside that country; where two clusters would overlap, one is nudged aside and a thin line ties it back to its country.

What a small number means

Only that we list few products from there so far. The map shows this directory, not the size of each country’s software industry.

Open source and self-hostable

Marked only where the company’s own pages say so and we kept the link: 45 open source and 52 self-hostable products so far. We have not checked 185 and 137 of them yet, so a missing mark is not a no.

Freshness

Counts come straight from the directory. This page last read them on 24 October 2026 and reads them again every hour; the share cards use the same numbers. How we check listings

Projection and borders

Lambert azimuthal equal-area centred on 10°E 52°N, the grid Eurostat uses for European statistics, so no country is drawn larger than it is. Borders from Natural Earth.
